The paper pound looks set to be replaced with polymer plastic in the UK. Source: AFP BRITAIN will dump their paper pounds in favour of Aussie polymer notes under plans being drawn up by the Bank of England. For the first time in the currencys 300-year-history, the 5 and 10 pound cotton-based paper notes are set to be produced in polymer as pioneered by Australia 25 years ago. The other currencies are to follow later. The Bank of England today said it was clear the new style notes were cleaner and more secure against counterfeit and because they lasted longer, would be more than $15 million cheaper to produce. But this is of course all conditional on whether the move is accepted by the British public and so far they are split on whether they should accept the change. Under the proposal the enlarged pound notes a frustration for travellers with standard wallets and purses will also be reduced in size to conventional European and other nation sizes and that has convinced some they are being short changed. End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. During the next two months there will be 50 events across the UK including in 13 major shopping centres to consult the public on the change proposed by the Bank of Englands new Canadian born governor Mark Carney who introduced polymer in Canada two years ago. The experiences of Australia who pioneered the technology and ironed out the kinks such as the early versions in the late 1980s which could be scratched and defaced will be used to encourage a change. Aussie notes will also be handed out to the public to feel and give their views. The Banks deputy governor said a final decision will be announced in December.
